American Pastoral
Just in the past couple of days Jeremy and I have discovered that Joel Salatin, who wrote the book You Can Farm which Jeremy reviewed last week, has a bunch of prodigies out there starting farms. The New York Times ran an article last Tuesday about a couple who quit their jobs as an entrepreneur and a teacher to buy land, build a house, and start farming Joel Salatin style. They read his books, and visited his farm to see how the whole thing operates. They now own a farm in Elberton, GA called Nature’s Harmony Farm that sells grass fed beef, pork, heritage turkeys, poultry, eggs, lamb, and free-range geese. Of course, like Joel Salatin’s Polyface Farm, they don’t ship and you have to be local to order their meat. They bought a 76 acre farm and built a large house on it, they say they are past caring about being rich and having money and things and would rather do something important. I think it is great people out there are starting more farms like his, but if you had enough money to buy a 76 acre farm with a large house on it to begin with, you are still doing pretty well.
We also discovered a farm here in Colorado that was started by a student of Salatin’s called Kinikin Heights Natural Foods. Unfortunately for us it is in Montrose, CO, which is about five and a half hours away. They sell lamb, poultry, beef, and pork, all grass fed and pastured using Salatin’s methods. Even though it’s a drive, we may go visit and buy somethingat some point since this is also near Colorado’s fruit growing and wine region.
After reading You Can Farm, Jeremy decided farming for a living was not for him, but we are excited about all the people out there employing Salatin’s methods for happier animals and healthier meat and land. Let’s hope the trend in this type of farming continues, and maybe one day Jeremy and I can buy a 76 acre farm with a large house and not have to worry about being rich.

I think it is amazing that people can/would do that. I am far from not caring about money. But I think that what you guys are doing is almost more important. I think sometimes people don't do things because they feel it is "all or nothing" so by showing you can make small changes to create a big impact it is inspiring and it encourages people to take at least one small step. As cliche as it is "Rome was not built in a day."

Thanks Bione! I think that is the nicest thing anyone has said! We know the blog is helping to motivate us to make more changes and read more, etc, but I'm glad it is also helping other people. It is great to think that we are making a difference, even if it's just among a few people!
