EarthFirst Paper Towels
We were shopping at Costco last week and I finally decided to try the paper towels they carry made out of recycled paper. I had always debated it in the past because the Bounty paper towels we usually buy work really well and I didn’t want to spend $13 on paper towels if they weren’t going to work. Starting this blog has inspired me to try things I wouldn’t normally, and I decided to go ahead and try the EarthFirst Paper Towels.
EarthFirst Paper Towels
I am pleasantly surprised by these paper towels. While they aren’t quite as thick as the ones we normally buy they still work really well, and they are cut into smaller pieces so I use less than I would if I were using our normal variety. They were also $2 or $3 cheaper than the Bounty paper towels and we can get them in bulk at Costco which saves us additional money. Bulk buying in itself is also good for the environment since you use less total packing for all of the products. According to their packaging, they are made from 100% recycled paper, they are hypo-allergenic, and are whitened without bleach which are all great for the environment. The packaging is also environmentally friendly with a life span of only 18 months. So we’d better use them before then or I’m not sure what will happen! 
Even if you don’t always use recycled paper products, just using them every once in a while will save trees! According to the Natural Resources Defense Council “If every household in the United States replaced just one roll of virgin fiber paper towels (70 sheets) with 100% recycled ones, we could save 544,000 trees.” Next time you are at the store, try some recycled paper products and help the environment.

Yeah, I definitely need to start buying recycled paper towels. I would prefer not using any paper towels, but I know that we’ll need them sometimes, even if we use towels more than we do now. I really wish that I could buy in bulk, but the only Sam’s clubs in Tulsa are really far from our house (at least 20-25 minutes)…I wonder what would be better for the environment–using more gas to save packaging, or saving gas and recycling most of the packaging we use?

This is a great idea! I have to admit that I can use a lot of paper towels, especially when I’m cleaning, so it makes sense to at least use recylced ones. I’ll have to check to see if Target sells them too. I also love all of Target’s “green” cleaning products!

I must admit for a long time I really didn’t want to try any of the green cleaning products because I was afraid they wouldn’t work as well. I have noticed that some brands of the eco friendly dishwashing liquid don’t work too well, but the other products I’ve bought (Method, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, and Seventh Generation) actually work quite well and smell great. I used some Method eucalyptus mint tub and tile cleaner to clean the bathroom the other day and it smelled so good – so much better than something with bleach in it, and I wasn’t worried about Leah breathing in noxious fumes.
I still haven’t tried the recycled paper towels myself, but we’re taking a trip to BJ’s wholesale club with some friends this weekend so maybe I’ll check them out. Our other issue living in NYC is that we have very little extra space to store bulk products, which I really hate because it discourages me from buying anything that way.
I have been thinking lately of trying to use towels for cleaning so I can wash them and reuse, but I don’t know if the laundry required for that is better or worse for the environment overall. I also read a good article on NY’s Council on the Environment’s website about cleaning methods that use no harsh chemicals and that you can make yourself, mostly from baking soda, vinegar, and the like. Its funny that you should post on paper towels today because earlier this morning I was reading about toilet paper in the NYTimes. Greenpeace (www.greenpeace.org) just put out a list of the best and worst toilet paper for the environment. Turns out all the soft toilet papers rely on virgin tree fibers to get the softness, which is really awful. I heard someone give a presentation on toilet paper a while back at UVM an have felt guilty about buying regular toilet paper ever since. Though we end up having to go to 3 different grocery stores to get everything, we always but Seventh Generation (a company based in Burlington, VT, btw) toilet paper and paper towels and honestly don’t notice much difference. The only time really rough paper sucks is when you have a cold and your nose is completely sore. Seventh Gen makes great products, but their kleenexes aren’t one of them. I know it sounds really gross, but the last couple of times I’ve had a cold, I used one of Chris’s grandfather’s old handkerchiefs. You can just wash them and they are way softer than even really nice kleenexes. And they really don’t get as gross as you would think. I recommend it.
Next Steph, you should post about menstruation products and the possibility of greening them, and make all the men who read this blog uncomfortable

Angie – Even though Sam’s is far away it might still be worth joining, we buy everything we need at once so really only go maybe once every 2 months, and sometimes not that often. I wonder if Sam’s sells any recycled products?
Melissa, Erin, and Amy – Thanks for the info on the green products. I have to admit I have been like Erin and hesitant to try things because I do not think they will work as well. I have some Clorox Greenworks dish soap right now and really like it. I heard an interesting story on NPR a while back about how Clorox had been developing eco-friendly products for longer than almost anyone and was surprised. I have also tried the Method products at Target. I need to get in the habit of just buying them everytime. Amy, I’ve heard of Seventh Generation but never bought them, I see them at Whole Foods and Sunflower but it seems like they only offer the toilet paper and things in packages of 2 or 4 or something really small. I wish they would offer them in bigger packages because I don’t like having to go to the store all of the time for more toilet paper! I actually think Costco might have recycled toilet paper too but I have not tried it yet. I will have to check next time we need some, we use Charmin right now which is very soft, so probably very bad for the environment.

Amy – do you ever shop at Publix? They have their Greenwise line of products and I was wondering if you’d ever tried them. They seem to be cheaper than the name brands, but was wondering if they were really environmentally friendly or how their products use. The food/condiment items are good, but I’m always tempted yet leery to try the paper goods. I really like my soft stuff….

Target has started to carry the Seventh Generation products. I’ve found that the selection is limited and not all stores carry the line. I haven’t compared prices, but assume Target would be less expensive than Whole Foods or some of the other specialty stores.

We do shop at Publix, there’s one right across from our neighborhood, but we also go to 2 other grocery stores on a regular basis. Publix is for main brand goods or when we are really in a hurry, there’s a grocery store called Ward’s that has some organic and tons of local produce, and then there’s Mother Earth that has all our hippy cleaning products and other hippy brands. I think we tried Publix greenwise toilet paper once, and it was fine. I’m really pretty used to recycled toilet paper by now, so I don’t really pay attention. It was pretty much comparable to Seventh Gen. As for the other greenwise, I usually pick it over regular food, but I think it has the same problems that Big Organic does, which Michael Pollan talks about. Its so difficult to feel good about your food these days.

Jeff and I purchased the same EarthFirst paper towels from Costco right after we moved into our current pad. We rarely use paper towels and thus still have plently that are 20+ years old – no sign of degeneration so I think the expiration date is bogus.
