Eating Local and CSA

A farm local to us near Louisville, CO
After reading the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, Jeremy and I decided we should start trying to eat locally. There are many reasons why this made sense to us. We are keeping money within our local community. We know where our food comes from, and now when food is being recalled left and right, it is even more important to trust the source of our food. Eating local is also good for our environment, when we eat food from the grocery store, we have no idea where it is coming from and more often than not it is from someplace far away, California or Mexico for example. Shipping food across the country not only sacrifices the taste of the food, but also has an environmental cost of burning fossil fuels to get the food to us.
After doing some investigation, it is actually fairly easy to eat locally. We started with finding a farm that offers a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. A farm will let you help pay upfront costs in the winter which cover seeds, equipment, etc, before the growing season starts, and in return you share in their harvest in the spring and summer. Even if you decide a CSA is not right for you, it is not hard to find local sources of food at farmer’s markets, farm stands, and even retailers trying to support local farms.
We have discovered a couple of great resources for eating locally. Local Harvest is a website directory of local food sources:
Eat Wild is a website where you can find local grass fed protein sources:

If you have discovered any good sources for eating locally, let us know, we are always looking for more information!

Thanks Brent!
Catherine, we’re excited to share some of the things we’ve learned since we started trying to become a little greener. I’m glad that it might help you out, but be sure to share with Stephanie and I if you find out anything that we don’t already know about.
