Fresh asparagus from the Boulder Farmer's Market

Fresh asparagus from the Boulder Farmer's Market

On Saturday, Steph, Jake and I braved the dreary, overcast and slightly rainy weather to head to our first Boulder Farmer’s Market of the season. We’ve had some trouble growing our seeds this year (more in other posts) so we were hoping to get some small plants to immediately transplant into our garden plot. We didn’t find anything that we were looking for that wasn’t super expensive, such as Kale plants $2 for small seedlings vs. $0.88 full grown and organic at the store, doesn’t seem like it’s worth the money for all that effort. We did however find 5-6 week old tomato plants and couldn’t help ourselves. Last year we lost most of our container plants to disease so we’re going overboard this year to ensure we have enough fresh tomatoes. We bought a Black Krill and a Sweet Tangerine.

The Black Krill should be a large odd looking purple/black tomato that’s tasty and the Sweet Tangerine is a large yellow tomato that was the favorite of the lady selling them. We still have 16 tomato seedlings we’re growing from seeds which we’ll post about sometime soon, but none of our tomatoes are purple or yellow types so we’re excited. We also ran into our friends Brent and Andrea at the stand, but unfortunately it was our last stop and we were freezing so we couldn’t stay long. Sorry guys, but it was still great to see you!

The thing that got us up in the morning, really the ultimate hope for the Spring farmer’s market, is fresh asparagus. We bought a 1lb bunch (for a whopping $9, ouch) and scurried home to cook it up. If you’ve never had fresh asparagus it’s well worth the treat. The stuff you get in the store is tough and doesn’t have as nice of a flavor as fresh organic asparagus. Our favorite way to prepare asparagus is to roast it in the oven. We’ll share the recipe in a post later this week. In the meantime it’s the season for fresh asparagus so go find some!

Great to be seen. It was too short, but we also got hooked into the tomato stand. We love the farmer who runs it and see him every year. We wound up with six plants – the black krim (think there was something subliminal after talking to you about it), brandywine, brandy boy (a non-heirloom, but we couldn't resist the hardier brandywine), sweet tangerine, sun golds and a shady lady. 55 days til the first fruits!

Hey Brent, that sounds like a pretty good selection, man it's making me hungry already. Did you already plant your Tomatoes outside? Ours are still sitting on the kitchen table, but we're hoping to get some walls of water and get them in the ground this week.

Yes, we planted. The water walls are up so we feel reasonably comfortable planting this early. We planted on the 10th of May last year and it worked out. What's a few days?

The Farmer's Market usually has it til the end of May. I think if you go to their website they have a list of which vegetables and fruits are in season when.
