Our First Harvest

Petrowski Turnip

Petrowski Turnip

OK, we did harvest a few strawberries as well, but those were basically there when we bought the plants, so I’m not counting them.  One of our Petrowski turnips was poking out of the ground yesterday so we went ahead and harvested it and had it along with our smorgasbord of other random food.  Our one Petrowski turnip produced about the same number of greens as the entire bunch of 10 CSA’s turnips we picked up from our farm.  The greens are a little prickly when raw but we cooked them up in some olive oil, garlic, and onion, sprinkled with a bit of vinegar and topped with some parmesan cheese.  They were actually pretty tasty just a little bitter, but overall pretty decent if you are into greens.

We roasted the turnip along with some CSA turnips and potatoes.  It was a yellow turnip as opposed to the white variety we get from the CSA and we were pleasantly surprised by how it tasted.  It was a little sweeter than the CSA turnips but still had a mild flavor and we actually ended up liking it better than the CSA turnips.  We are excited to harvest the rest of the ones we’ve got and plant more when it gets cooler for the winter.

Meanest Weed I’ve Met

We don’t normally post on the weekend, but we thought you’d enjoy this quick mini-post.

Mean weed with lots of thorns

Mean weed with lots of thorns

Our little digital camera isn’t the best on small detail up close, but you can sorta see the  spikes this weed has nearly everywhere on it. It gave Stephanie quite the shock when she went to pull it like we do with all of our weeds. This is the only one we’ve seen like this and even the community garden leader didn’t recognize it. I hope this is the last of these!
