Local Food Movement

Local Farm Near Boulder, CO
If you have been paying attention to the news lately it seems like eating local and organic has been everywhere. The New York Times had an interesting article last week titled Is a Food Revolution Now in Season? The article discusses why local and organic food activists are hopeful that the government will begin taking measures that will benefit them.
Regardless of your politics, if you are into local and organic food, it is a pretty exciting time. Michelle Obama recently planted an organic vegetable garden at the White House and has been talking about the importance of local foods, members of congress have read Omnivore’s Dilemma, and the new Deputy Secretary of Agriculture is a local food activist who according to an article on Gourmet.com “has directed a group of projects designed to stimulate community gardens, develop regional marketing strategies between consumers and local farmers, and promote food and gardening education in local schools”. And according to another article the number of small local farmer’s across the U.S. has been increasing.
With the economy faltering, I hope that this movement will still make some headway and not be seen as something for an elite group of people who can afford it. If the government really did something to help small local farmer’s, cheap local organic fruits and vegetable’s may no longer be seen this way. Healthy food is something that should be available to everyone and not just people who can pay the extra it costs over eating fast food.
Farmer’s Market Season Begins
Jeremy and I went up to Fort Collins this weekend to a winter Community Market at the Opera Galleria. We have been dying for the farmer’s market in Boulder to open and even though there wasn’t much in the way of fresh produce they had lots of cool local vendors. We bought quite a bit of random stuff, including grass-fed beef soup bones, a dog treat for Nikko, cupcakes, pasta, and organic all purpose cleaner. Nikko loved her dog treat and Jeremy and I loved the cupcakes from the Butter Cream Cupcakery in Fort Collins. We have not tried Denver’s Pappardelle’s pasta yet but we bought two different kinds, garlic chive papparadelle and sweet red onion linguine. The all purpose cleaner we bought is concentrate and is organic and biodegradable that smells great from Queen of the Meadow.

Winter Market Haul
The Boulder Farmer’s Market opens this coming weekend (Saturday, April 4 from 8AM-2PM) and we will be heading there on Saturday morning. To find a farmer’s market in your area go to Local Harvest’s search and type in your zip code.
